Unlike other plants, where manganese ore lump is used directly in blast furnace, in VSP, it was proposed to use manganese ore fines in sinter productions. This would ensure much more consistent manganese content in the hot metal. The method most commonly employed is spectrophotometric determination based upon the oxidation of manganese (II) to\u00a0permanganate\u00a0with either potassium\u00a0periodate\u00a0or ammonium persulfate in the presence of\u00a0silver ions\u00a0as catalyst. A method for the determination of manganese in silicate rocks is based upon the reaction of manganese (II) with formaldoxime in alkaline solution. The most serious interference appears to be that from iron that also forms a highly colored complex with the reagent. This chapter discusses the spectrophotometric determination of manganese as permanganate. It discusses the use of sulfuric acid and hydrofluoric acids to decompose the sample material. After the decomposition of any remaining accessory minerals, the rock solution is diluted to volume for the determination of manganese.
